What do you think about cats being declawed?

My kitten is 4 months old and I'm thinking about getting him neutered and declawed (front paws only) at the same time in a month. What is your opinion on getting cats declawed? He hurts a lot when he uses his claws. And he will be a housecat but he will be defenseless if he were to get into a fight.
